The Space Within is an invitation to live an impossibly wonderful life. It will help you to move beyond your theories and beliefs about how much happiness is possible and how much is ‘too good to be true.’ It will help you to return to love, and to come home to your own innate wisdom.
YOU ARE NOT WHO YOU THINK YOU ARE–YOU ARE THE SPACE WHERE THOUGHTS ARISE
Thought is the architect of both hope and despair, the source of every color in the emotional rainbow. Without thought, there would be no delineation in our world, like the pure clarity of light before it passes through a prism and bursts into a kaleidoscope of color.
But unrecognized thought demands our attention and fills our consciousness. And when we get caught up in thought, we lose our way. It’s like being disoriented by mist rolling into base camp. Whether the ‘mist’ of thought takes the form of a beautiful vision on a icy chill, it can blind us to what is already present and make us feel as though we need to go stumbling about in search of instant remedies instead of waiting for the mist to clear.
In fact, you don’t even have to wait–you can just close your eyes to the mist, turn away from the noise, and realize that no matter where you are in your life or in the world, you’re never more than one thought away from home.
You’re already home. You always were.
THE GREAT GOAL IS NOT TO ESCAPE THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE; IT IS TO EMBRACE AND TRANSCEND IT
I’d always thought that to transcend something was to move past it–i.e., to leave it in my rear-view mirror as I carried on speeding my way towards enlightenment. Yet what I’ve realized is that to transcend is not to leave behind but to expand beyond. It’s less about floating above the muck of life than being able to go down into it without any fear of drowning in it.
In this sense, waking up to your spiritual nature is like being a Russian nesting doll. Even as you expand into higher levels of consciousness and understanding, you still take the lower levels with you. And instead of using spiritual understanding as an avoidance strategy, we can use it as a safety net, allowing us to experience our human thoughts and emotions evermore deeply, knowing that the intelligence and peace of Mind will always be there to catch us if we fall.
So I can experience my natural ups and downs without so much of the accompanying story and drama. I’m less hypnotized by my highs and frigthened by my lows. I can sob without suffering and feel fear without being afraid. My divinity can inform my humanity. My heart can break open without breaking apart.
Abandoning the pursuit of happiness has revealed a deeper truth and an even more magical possibility: the timeless presence of the space within, a river of wisdom and wellbeing that is no less present when we’re down than when we feel on top of the world.
